Explore Beautiful Bilbao

Bilbao has a certain magical feel to it. It often feels quieter than other Spanish cities but there is still lots to do and it is brimming with culture at every turn. Its relatively compact size and proximity to other Northern Spanish destinations like Santander and San Sebastian means it can act as a brilliant base to explore from.

Bilbao mixes old and new architecture for a brilliant skyline at every turn. There are of course, the more famous sights like the Guggenheim and the Anish Kapoor outdoor exhibition. But there are also plenty of cobbled streets to get lost in and plazas filled with traditional pintxos bars. Like San Sebastian, the foodie scene is big business in Bilbao and you will be spoilt for choice.

Whilst this destination is popular, San Sebastian still feels not as developed as other Spanish resorts. This makes it a great option for travellers wanting a trip with purpose.

sampling the delicious pintxos (bite-sized tapas often served buffet style) at one of the numerous bars in the cobbled streets of the old town or plaza nueva
visiting the Guggenheim and Anish Kapooir installation - truly a stunning experience
heading to the Azkuna Zentroa, a former wine warehouse now converted to a cultural and leisure centre. You can even go swimming in the rooftop pool
hiking one of the hill and mountain trails to see the famous skyline
soaking up the sun at the beaches, a 30 minute train ride from the city
booking in for a wine tour. Rioja region can be easily reached and offers an incredible day excursions. There are also traditional Basque Cider Houses not too far away which offer an authentic local experience
