Travel to bustling bUCHAREST
Bucharest, in southern Romania is an iconic capital city. Filled with rich history and culture, but often overlooked compared with other cities in Europe for a weekend break, it can provide a great getaway with purpose. It is also an ideal base from which to explore other regions in Romania if you have a bit more time.
Bucharest was once called the "Paris of the East' and wandering around the streets, there are still glimmers of ornate buildings. Though its opulent days have faded away, this city has both cosmopolitan and modern districts as well as fascinating historical architecture ranging from French-style monuments to remnants of communist neighbourhoods.
Things to not miss out on in Bucharest:
-
visiting the Palace of Parliament, the world's largest parliamentary building at over three million square feet. This landmark was built by the dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu and his wife Elena and still remains unfinished
-
wandering the seemingly endless shops, bars, restaurants and cafes in the glamorous old town
-
checking out the local contemporary art scene at galleries such as Galateca which hosts regular events
-
walking in one of the gorgeous green parks. Herăstrău is a 200 hectare park and has everything from a lake to a summer bar scene
-
heading to Revolution Square, where you can still see damage to buildings from a week-long uprising and bloody fighting in Romania's quest for democracy

Ancient Attractions and Cosmopolitan Culture
Bucharest can be described as a city of opposites. There is some fading architecture due to the city's chequered past, but this provides a certain authenticity that lots of travellers admire. In contrast, there are also lots of upmarket areas, a great cafe culture and lively restaurant and nightlife scene too.
Though there are some larger hotels, our travel specialists recommend staying in one of the smaller boutique hotels or apartments. This means you don't need to compromise on luxury but are in an excellent location and contributing to smaller hotel companies.
