Travel to Riveting Ragusa, Modica and Noto
The hillside towns of Ragusa, Modica and Noto are three of the most famous towns in Sicily. Alongside many other towns and villages in this region, they were devastated in a 1693 earthquake. Following this tragic disaster, architects were instructed to rebuild these towns (and five others). The towns were rebuilt to such a high standard in the Baroque style so popular at the time that they have been awarded UNESCO world heritage status.
The beauty of these hillside towns are that whilst there are some similarities, they also feel quite different from one another. Ragusa is divided by half, an old town and a new town (with the new town being rebuilt following the earthquake). Modica is a bit smaller but is impressive with its array of quaint cafes and chocolate bars. Noto feels a bit more upmarket with opulent buildings and gardens to explore. One thing is for sure, wherever you go, you will find stunning architecture such as churches, cathedrals, palaces and castles to explore.
Some of the best things to do in these unique Sicilian towns:
-
relaxing on the golden sands of Sampieri beach in the Ragusa region
-
sampling some of the best chocolate in the world in Modica
-
heading up the 250 step staircase to the UNESCO listed cathedral Duomo di San Giorgio in Modica
-
walking around the architectural wonder that is Noto, admiring Baroque churches, palaces and gardens as you go
-
spotting flamingos and other exotic birds at the Vendicari Nature Reserve in the
Noto region
